What constitutes a Mental Disorder?

Mental Disorder is basically a wide range of conditions that effect mood, thinking and behavior generally resulting in depression. Depression can cause multiple problems ranging from anxiety, panic attack, phobia from several things, feeling of sadness, social anxiety and some other problems too.

It’s often said that depression results from chemical imbalance. Research suggests that depression doesn’t spread from just having too much or too little of certain brain chemicals. Rather there are many possible ways that can cause depression. While people believe that emotions reside in the heart, Science though finds the source of emotions to the brain. Some areas of brain help regulate the mood. Researchers believe that the focus on levels of specific brain chemicals should be less than nerve cells connections, nerve cell growth, and the functioning of nerve circuits which may have a major impact on depression.

These disorders are often associated with chronic physical illnesses like heart disease and diabetes (Sugar).

What are the major focus areas?

The need of the hour is to sensitize and educate people about signs and symptoms of mental illness and depression and make them understand about the importance of communication, tell them to stay in contact with their loved ones, their family and friends. The sufferers need to have more open conversations which will create a more inclusive environment for them.

There has to be social acceptance of the fact that mental illness is like any other illness and we need to accept the people with mental illness and give them  sympathy to ensure their condition doesn’t worsen. People need to understand that the person suffering from depression need full support from their loved ones. They need to have a heart to heart conversation and discuss their problems.

Psychiatric help doesn’t make a person different from the society, they need to be treated equally in-fact with more love so that they can adjust and can have a chance to live their life happily with less burden. How we think about mental health and mental illness matters. It is very important to recognize mental health as essential to physical health, which can be the first step in developing a holistic medicine and treatment for such illnesses.

Anybody can suffer from mental or emotional health problems. We ignore the messages that tell us something is wrong and something is eating us from inside and try toughing it out by distracting ourselves or self-medicating with alcohol, drugs, or self-destructive behaviors. Some people start taking anti-depressant or  sleeping pills which later become an addiction and addiction always make a person weak. Some people put up their barriers in the hope that others won’t notice their problems and weakness. Some hope that their situation will eventually improve on its own with time or they simply give up—telling themselves this is “just the way they are” which is not right.

  • In some societies, mental and emotional issues are seen as less important than physical issues. They’re seen as a sign of weakness or somehow as being our own fault in some ways.
  • Some people mistakenly see mental health problems as weakness. Men, especially, would often rather bottle up their feelings than seek help because they don’t want people to see them as weak.
  • In the modern age, we’re obsessed with seeking simple answers to complex problems such as we look for connections on social media instead of reaching out to people in the real world or our family; to boost our mood and ease depression we take a pills or else we take the drugs or alcohol, rather than address the underlying issues with somebody who can understand.

How to get over your issue?

You need to boost your mental health and, yes, believe me it is possible you just need to have faith in yourself.

  • Boost your Social Connections - Have healthy social connections. Talk to people, do not keep your problems inside of you for long time, keep in touch with your loved ones and talk to them and if you really don’t have anybody to talk then take professional help.
  • Stay Active - You need to stay active in your life, always keep yourself busy in something constructive - adopt some hobbies, learn something new, do yoga and exercises, do anything you like to do.
  • Manage Stress – Talk to people who understand you and make you feel better. Do not panic in any condition and think with a cool state of mind. Adopt meditation in you daily routine - it can keep you positive.
  • Healthy Diet - Have a healthy diet and never skip your meals. Do not eat too much in stress it will have a bad effect on your health and you need to stay healthy.
  • Quality Sleep - Have a quality sleep of at least 7-8 hours to make your body calm and active.
  • Demystifi Your Strengths - And more importantly you need to understand the meaning and importance of your life. Unravel your personality and strengths and work on things which make you happy.

Always believe in yourself and love yourself unconditionally. Life is not easy in any way but you need to stay positive. The only journey is the journey within. Mental health needs more sunlight, more love and unashamed conversations. If everyone starts being honest about their pain, their anger, and their shortcomings instead of pretending that they don’t exist, then maybe we’ll leave the world a better place.

The society needs to understand that sufferers need their unconditional love and support.
